Luther faculty and students present at Peace Prize Forum
Date 3/8/2001 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsLaurie Iudin-Nelson, assistant professor of Russian studies, will present "Chechnya: A Conflict Within Russian Borders" with students Nathan Gerth ('01), Kristin Deinert ('02), Jenny Moffitt ('02) and Yulia Maksimova ('01). The seminar will explore the background of the current military/political conflict in Chechnya.
Chris Weigel, assistant professor of philosophy, will tackle questions about borders in "Crossing Boundaries: Peacemaking and Liberal Education."
Jay McDivitt ('01), will lead an interactive discussion aimed at identifying the roots of homophobia in "Dismantling Heterosexism: Where Love Transcends Boundaries."
Gereon Kopf, assistant professor of religion, will discuss comparative studies of Euro-American and Asian cultures in "East and West: Geography, Tradition, or Ideology?"
Lori Stanley, associate professor of anthropology, will look at how Postville, Iowa has been transformed into an ethnic community. Stanley, along with Postville residents will present "Forging Peace in Small-town Iowa."
Char Kunkel, assistant professor of sociology, and Novian Whitsitt, assistant professor Africana studies and English, will facilitate a seminar titled "Privilege and Prejudice: Where Do You Stand?" focusing on what it takes to develop anti-racist and anti-sexist identities, awareness, and behaviors.
Holly Natvig, instructor in education, will address strategies to implement conflict resolution programs at schools in "School Violence: A Rite of Passage?"
Uwe Rudolf, professor of accounting and management will examine globalization and the stresses and changes it imposes on Japanese society and culture in "The Third Invasion: Globalization and 'Cultural Revolution' in Japan?"
