2004 Nintendo Fusion Tour In San Francisco

2004 Nintendo Fusion Tour In San Francisco

Cute Baby Clothes With: Robert Miller

On October 5th, Nintendo and the large caravan of the Fusion Tour visited San Francisco to promote the new sounds of punk rock and of course, the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance SP. The caravan of large tour busses and semi-trucks filled the side of the Warfield Theater, one of the loudest-sounding structures in the heart of the great city. The near sell-out crowd spawned from teenagers to older adults just hoping to listen to the likes of the ever-popular Lost Prophets and the up-and-coming rock band, Story of the Year.

Once again, GameCube Advanceds SF Team was there to cover the event. Not surprisingly so, the venue was filled with Nintendo Fusion Tour banners and promotional flyers floating all around the place. Visitors to San Francisco simply couldnt ignore the hype surrounding this event. Concert-goers were flooding the citys Bay Area Rapid Transit subway, all ready eager to listen to the various types of rock during the show.

Walking into the theater lobby, we were greeted by a contest booth allowing people to simply sign up to win free GBA SPs. Of course, we ourselves didnt know how this worked, but were sure at least someones happy about it right now. We did receive these cool Donkey Kong patches, Nintendo beanies, and limited edition Nintendo Fusion Tour pins. It was just another night for Nintendo to strut their joy for the company name. Although most people would expect plenty to be shown, being that it was a Nintendo show, Nintendos showing of their products was rather simplified. Only a few GameCube kiosks were placed on the floor, despite the rather fantastic showing of the Game Boy Advance SPs by Nintendos very own game girls with the handhelds attached to their suits. Some of the GameCubes more varied yet already released games were on the floor, including Mario Kart: Double Dash, and Spiderman 2. Much to most of our disappointment, the Nintendo DS was nowhere to be found. According to an event representative, the venue lobby was simply too small for such a showing. More floor room wouldve given people enough room to roam around the much anticipated system.

And, believe it or not, Nintendo wasnt the main focus of this event. People were here for the bands, the mosh pits, the crowd surfing, and plain punk-rock. Once you got inside the actual auditorium, the only affiliation sign from Nintendo were their Fusion Tour signs placed at each side of the stage. Not surprisingly enough, there werent any t-shirts being thrown out to the crowds nor were there any Nintendo-themed presentations being demonstrated.

Still, the lineup of Letterkills, My Chemical Romance, and Lost Prophets thrilled the crowd of all ages. The punk-rock themed night became even wilder when headliner Story of the Year went up to the stage. Presented with their band name behind them, crowds began singing their songs as the night drew on, a three-hour and a half one at that. Crowd-surfing became evident every couple of seconds, and hands were flying in the air as high-octane beats chanted the bands famous anthems. It was near impossible to not have a feel for the contagious ambience of the auditorium. This place was rocking!

Rock on!

After the concert, people left to shouts of awe and why dont they play smore? It was obvious that Nintendo had done their jobs. The concert was an instant success for both sides of the guitar, most especially the fans that got their moneys worth and tasted just some of what the most recognized game company in the world had to offer. Sure, Nintendo couldve put more emphasis on their presence with free goodies and t-shirts, but who ever said this was E3?

The Nintendo Fusion Tour ends in mid-November, so be sure to reserve your tickets today! Who knows maybe the DS will make a showing?
