Cute Baby Clothes I have read and re-read Sandy McPhails letter which was printed in The New Jersey Herald on Sept. 6. Ms. McPhail stated several times that she did not intend to trivialize the tragic death of an infant girl in a New York bungalow colony. The child had been snatched by a young bear and mauled. Yet there are very subtle suggestions in the letter that the childs mother was to blame, at least in part, for this horrific event. Ms. McPhail said that she had heard people ask questions such as why the child was outside in a stroller by itself in an area where the bears are fed and hang round.

Organic Baby Clothes Apparently the same people asked, why were the other children who could run themselves brought in first and not the infant? I was not there and so I do not know if bears were fed by the people in that bungalow colony and hung around there. Perhaps her older children spotted the bear, were excited, and decided to get a closer look. Then the mother would most certainly have made it a priority to get those children who could run themselves out of harms way. While were blaming her, why not chastise her for having more children that she could remove from the bears presence at one time? She could also be found guilty of allowing her little daughter to have formula spilled on her clothes. This odor might have been what attracted the bear in the first place.

Newborn Baby Clothes If Ms. McPhail and those who wish to stop a bear hunt hope to win over others to their way of thinking, theyd better stick with their arguments about garbage cans, bird feeders, etc. Reasonable people will listen to reasonable proposals. But to suggest, however subtly, that this tragedy might somehow have been prevented by the mother if only she had ... will merely alienate those who are undecided about the issue. It makes the people who oppose a bear hunt seem mean, cold-hearted, and uncaring for those of their own species.

While it is true that the lesson of generous sacrifice is one of the best that parents can give their children, not everyone is capable of heroic virtue. Everyone knows mothers who bear eight, ten or twelve children and who manage such large households with little difficulty. But not everyone has the requisite emotional and physical resources to do this, so that what for some might be done without difficulty, for others might require a heroic virtue that the Church has generally not insisted on.
